A Greek triple jumper issued an apology on Wednesday after the nation’s Olympic committee expelled her from the London Games.
“I would like to express my heartfelt apologies for the unfortunate and tasteless joke I published on my personal Twitter account,”
said Greek triple jumper Voula Papachristou. “I am very sorry and ashamed for the negative responses I triggered, since I never wanted to offend anyone, or to encroach human rights.”
The tasteless joke to which she refers is this tweet, which Papachristou sent on Sunday: “With so many Africans in Greece… At least the West Nile mosquitoes will eat home made food!!”
Her comments reportedly went viral, igniting thousands of negative responses.
Greece’s Olympic committee on Wednesday booted Papachristou from its team for the tweet as well as others she sent in support of the nation’s far-right party, according to the
Associated Press.
The Hellenic Olympic Committee—which governs Greece’s Olympians—said Papachristou is “placed outside the Olympic team for statements contrary to the values and ideas of the Olympic movement.”
The London Olympics are being dubbed the social media games due to the widespread use of these tools as well as the International Olympic Committee’s attempts to prohibit such use during the competitions.
